Stop my zip from sticking?

Posted in Camping Tips & Ideas / FAQs on 3rd January 2013

Author - James Coplin

No matter what tent you buy or how the manufacturers try and combat the problem, zips on tents will get the occasional snag!

Annoying as this may be, the problem can be avoided in a lot of cases with just a little preparation and care.

A lot of zips on tent doors, by the nature of the shape of the door, zip and unzip in a circular or arched motion. We naturally want to do/undo the zip in a straight line, we’re usually in a hurry to do it, and sometimes the thing will snag or catch on the material. The zip when done up is already under great duress from being pulled in all directions by the tent, so help it along and be slow and careful to move in the same direction the zip is taking.

Tent Zip Care from World of Camping

The very nature of camping means you will likely be in a dusty and sometimes muddy environment, grit and dirt finds it’s way into the zip and can cause problems. If your zip is sticking in places or if it looks dirty, go over it with a toothbrush and some water. we recommend you use someone elses toothbrush for this, and put it back where you found it……..or take an old one with you, it’s up to you ;-).

It’s also advisable at the beginning and end of your trip to clean, then spray your zips with some lubricating spray to keep them working freely and zippity doo dah for the lifespan of your tent.
