Tall Drive-Away Awnings for Motorhomes: How to Choose

World of Camping |

A tall drive-away awning adds a separate living space beside your motorhome or high-roof campervan, with the flexibility to leave it pitched while you take the vehicle out. The most important buying decision is not the height of your roof: it is the height of the point where the awning connects.

This guide compares tall-fit options from Outdoor Revolution, Vango and Camptec, explains how to measure, and highlights the practical details to check before ordering. Stock information was updated on 20 October 2026.

What is a tall drive-away awning?

A tall or high drive-away awning connects to a higher attachment point than a low-fit campervan awning. Its connecting tunnel, sometimes called the cowl, bridges the gap between the freestanding awning and your vehicle.

“High”, “Tall” and “Mid” are not universal measurements. The Cayman High models below are listed for 255–305cm, the Camptec High for 255–300cm, the Vango Kela Pro II and HexAway Pro II Tall for 255–295cm, and the Galli Pro Air Tall for 245–295cm. Match your measurement to the exact model, not just its category name.

How to measure your motorhome for an awning

  1. Park on level ground in the condition you expect to use on site.
  2. Measure vertically from the ground to the actual attachment point, such as the awning rail or a compatible channel on your wind-out awning. Do not measure to the top of the roof.
  3. Check that the measurement falls within the stated connection-height range for the exact model and variant.
  4. Check the usable attachment length, connection method and clearance needed for doors to open.
  5. Check the full footprint against your campsite pitch, allowing for the tunnel and guy ropes.

A vehicle model name alone cannot guarantee compatibility. Rail position, conversions and fitted accessories can change the connection you need. Ask us to check the fit if your measurement is near a range boundary.

Outdoor Revolution Cayman High: in stock

The Outdoor Revolution Cayman Air High and Cayman High D/T are in stock at World of Camping. Choose between an inflatable frame and a traditional poled design, both with a listed connection-height range of 255–305cm.

Cayman Air High: inflatable frame, 255–305cm

The Outdoor Revolution Cayman Air High is listed for attachment heights of 255–305cm. Its features include a single-inflation Dura-Tech Oxygen Air Frame, a sewn-in PE groundsheet, mesh ventilation and 4mm and 6mm twin cowl piping.

Consider this model if you want an inflatable family living space and its connection range matches your vehicle. Confirm the exact model year and supplied accessories with us when ordering, including whether a footprint forms part of your package.

Cayman High D/T: poled frame, 255–305cm

The Outdoor Revolution Cayman High D/T is a poled alternative with the same listed 255–305cm connection-height range. It uses two fibreglass poles and includes a sewn-in PE groundsheet, front and side access, mesh ventilation and a vehicle-entry door in the cowl.

It is worth comparing if you prefer a traditional pole structure. The inner tent, LED lighting and canopy poles are described as optional additions, so include any extras you need in your budget.

Vango tall drive-away awnings

Vango Kela Pro II Air Tall: enclosed touring living space

The Vango Kela Pro II Air Tall fits vehicle attachment heights of 255–295cm. Its AirBeam structure and roll-away tunnel let you leave the awning standing when you take the vehicle out.

Its listed specification includes Dynamic Pro fabric with a 6,000mm hydrostatic head, a fully sewn-in groundsheet, diamond clear windows, privacy curtains and two tunnel doors. SkyTrack/SkyHook compatibility provides options for hanging suitable lights or storage. A manual AirBeam pump is included; an electric pump is optional.

The sewn-in groundsheet makes the Kela worth considering when you want an enclosed living area that helps reduce draughts, insects and ground moisture. This Pro II Tall model was unavailable to order online when checked on 20 October 2026; contact us for the latest availability.

Vango Galli Pro Air Tall: larger family touring space

The Vango Galli Pro Air Tall is listed for 245–295cm attachment heights and was available to order online when checked on 20 October 2026. It offers a larger, adaptable living area with a pre-attached front canopy and the option to add appropriate inner tents for sleeping accommodation.

Its listed features include Sentinel ECO Pro fabric with a 6,000mm hydrostatic head, AirBeam construction, a sewn-in groundsheet, mesh doors and a roll-away connecting tunnel. The product specification lists a total weight of 32.9kg and a packed size of 90 × 38 × 41cm, so check your storage space and handling requirements before choosing it.

Consider the Galli if family living space and layout matter more than the smallest pack. It is designed for touring rather than static or long-term seasonal pitching. Optional inner tents and a suitable drive-away connection kit should be checked separately.

Vango HexAway Pro II Air Tall: sociable space and a removable groundsheet

The Vango HexAway Pro II Air Tall is listed for attachment heights of 255–295cm. It offers a freestanding living space for socialising or storing kit, with an AirBeam structure and a roll-away connecting tunnel.

Its Dynamic Pro fabric has a listed 6,000mm hydrostatic head. Unlike the Kela’s sewn-in groundsheet, the HexAway Pro II has a linked-in groundsheet that can be removed for easier cleaning after muddy trips or beach days. Other listed features include diamond clear windows, privacy curtains, ventilation, two tunnel doors and SkyTrack/SkyHook compatibility. A manual pump is included.

Consider it if you prioritise a sociable living layout and the flexibility of a removable groundsheet. This Pro II Tall model was unavailable to order online when checked on 20 October 2026; contact us for the latest availability.

Camptec Moto Crown Elite High: a 3 × 3 metre air-awning option

The Camptec Moto Crown Elite Driveaway Air Awning has a dedicated High (255–300cm) variant, which was available to order online when checked on 20 October 2026.

Its listed features include a 3 × 3 metre floor area, a single inflation point, Climatech SY17 material and a rear tunnel with doors on both sides. A protective canopy over the door and a fly screen on the side panel provide shelter and ventilation.

Select the High variant deliberately: the same product page also offers Low and Medium versions. Check the complete footprint and required connection accessories before ordering.

Which tall awning should you choose?

Start with connection height. For a 300cm attachment point, the listed Cayman High and Camptec High ranges extend to that measurement, while the Vango models featured here stop at 295cm. At a 305cm attachment point, only the Cayman High models among those compared here list a range that includes your measurement. The other fitting requirements still need checking.

Next compare the layout. The Cayman D/T gives you a poled option; the Cayman Air, Vango models and Camptec use inflatable structures. The Galli offers larger family touring space, the Kela provides a sewn-in-groundsheet living area, and the HexAway Pro II offers the cleaning flexibility of a linked-in groundsheet. Match those differences to how you camp rather than choosing on frame type alone.

Air or poled: practical considerations

An air awning replaces the main traditional pole framework with inflatable tubes; a poled awning uses a rigid pole structure. Both need careful positioning, pegging and guying in accordance with their instructions.

Compare packed weight, bag dimensions, pitching procedure and supplied accessories for the exact model. An inflatable design is not automatically lighter, and a poled design is not automatically the smaller pack. For touring, think about how often you will pitch and how much storage you have. For longer holidays, prioritise the living layout and usable space.

Check the connection kit before buying

Correct height does not guarantee that an awning will connect straight to your vehicle. Check the rail or wind-out awning channel, piping size, attachment length and whether you need a compatible drive-away kit or adaptor.

A suitable drive-away connection can make detaching and reconnecting more convenient, but the correct kit depends on both sides of the connection. Send us your measured attachment height and details of your rail or wind-out awning if you need help choosing.

Practical advice for UK touring

Check campsite pitch dimensions, space for guy ropes and access around your vehicle. Use the supplied ventilation to help manage moisture and follow the manufacturer’s pitching and weather guidance. No awning should be treated as storm-proof.

Before driving away, disconnect the vehicle completely and secure the awning as instructed. Marking your vehicle’s original position can help when you return. Follow the safety instructions for any cooking appliances, heaters or other equipment; a sheltered space is not automatically suitable for every appliance.

Frequently asked questions about tall awnings

Do I need a tall awning for a high-roof campervan?

Possibly, but measure the attachment point first. Roof height alone does not establish the required connection height. Match your measurement to the exact awning’s stated range.

Are the Cayman High awnings in stock?

Yes. The Outdoor Revolution Cayman Air High and Cayman High D/T are in stock at World of Camping. Both have a listed connection-height range of 255–305cm.

What is the difference between the Kela, Galli and HexAway Tall?

The models featured here offer different layouts and groundsheet arrangements. The Kela Pro II has a sewn-in groundsheet, the Galli Pro Air offers larger family touring space with optional inner tents, and the HexAway Pro II has a removable linked-in groundsheet. Their listed connection ranges also differ: 255–295cm for the Kela Pro II and HexAway Pro II, and 245–295cm for the Galli Pro Air.

Will a 255–295cm awning fit a 300cm attachment point?

No. A 300cm attachment point is outside that stated range. Choose a model whose specified range includes your measurement and check its connection method, rail length and door clearance as well.

Can I leave a drive-away awning on the pitch?

That is what a freestanding drive-away design is intended to allow. Disconnect it fully from the vehicle and secure it as instructed before driving off. Check your campsite’s requirements too.

Does every tall awning fit every motorhome?

No. Connection height, attachment method, usable rail length, door clearance and pitch space all need checking. Do not rely on a vehicle name or the word “Tall” alone.

What if my attachment point is lower?

Read our mid-height drive-away awning buying guide. Manufacturers’ height categories can overlap, so the measured fit matters more than the category name.

Choose the fit first, then the features

Start with your measured connection height, then check the attachment system and pitch space. Once those essentials are right, compare frame type, layout, ventilation and storage requirements. Contact World of Camping with your vehicle details, attachment height and rail or wind-out awning information if you would like help narrowing the options.

Looking for a different attachment position? Our rear and tailgate awnings guide for campervans and SUVs compares rear-mounted options for lower connection heights. These are a different fitting category from the tall side-connected awnings above, so check your vehicle’s attachment position and measurements.
