What Size Driveaway Awning Do I Need? Low, Mid & Tall Explained

Grey Vango Roca Air Low driveaway awning connected beside a dark grey campervan, with the vehicle tunnel and guy lines visible.

Damian Rowe |

Choose a driveaway awning by measuring your vehicle’s attachment height, then checking the connection length and attachment method. Low, Mid and Tall describe attachment-height options, not a universal vehicle fit or the size of the living area.

For the Vango models featured in our current guides, Low fits 180–210cm, Mid fits 215–255cm and Tall fits 255–295cm. These ranges are model-specific examples, not a sizing rule for every awning brand or generation. Always check the exact listing and fitting instructions before ordering.

This World of Camping guide helps campervan and motorhome owners preparing for UK touring holidays understand what to measure, what to check and when to ask for fitting advice.

Low, Mid and Tall: the quick answer

  • Low: 180–210cm attachment height on the featured Vango Low models.
  • Mid: 215–255cm attachment height on the featured Vango Mid models.
  • Tall: 255–295cm attachment height on the featured HexAway Pro II Air and Kela Pro II Air Tall models.

Measure from the ground to the point where the awning will connect to your vehicle, not to the highest point of the roof. If your measurement falls outside a model’s stated range, between ranges or at a shared boundary, do not guess which one to buy.

How to measure your vehicle for a driveaway awning

  1. Identify the connection point. Establish where the tunnel will attach to your vehicle or existing awning system. Check your vehicle or connection-system instructions if you are unsure.
  2. Measure on level ground. With the vehicle safely parked in the setup you intend to use, measure vertically from the ground to the actual attachment point. Record the measurement in centimetres.
  3. Check the usable connection length. Measure the space available for the connection and compare it with the exact awning’s requirements. Height alone cannot confirm fit.
  4. Identify the attachment method. Note the rail, channel or other connection system you intend to use, including any manufacturer specifications. Do not assume all rails, beading or drive-away kits are interchangeable.
  5. Check access and clearance. Consider doors, roof equipment and the position of the connecting tunnel. Check that your proposed setup can be used without obstructing vehicle access.
  6. Compare the exact model. Match your measurements and attachment details against its listing and fitting instructions. Confirm any separate kit or adapter required before ordering.

If you use equipment that changes your parked vehicle setup, recheck the relevant measurements for that setup. Follow the vehicle and awning instructions rather than relying on a measurement taken under different conditions.

Why roof height is not the same as attachment height

The height to the top of a vehicle does not necessarily match the point where an awning connects. A campervan described as low-roof or a motorhome described as high-roof therefore cannot be assigned an awning size on that description alone.

The same vehicle model can also have different conversion equipment or connection arrangements. Measure your own vehicle and check the actual attachment system.

Does Low mean a smaller living area?

No. Low, Mid and Tall identify attachment-height options in the featured ranges. They do not establish the floor area, overall height, packed size or weight of an awning. Compare those specifications separately for each exact model.

Start with a compatible attachment height, then choose the living area and campsite features you want. Buying a different tunnel height is not a shortcut to getting more usable living space.

Connection length and drive-away kits

A matching height range is only the first fitting check. The awning’s connection must also suit the length and type of attachment point on your vehicle. Confirm the rail or channel specification and any adapter or drive-away kit needed.

A drive-away kit and related connection accessories may be sold separately. Check the individual listing rather than assuming everything needed for your vehicle is included with the awning.

If you need advice, give World of Camping your measured attachment height, usable connection length, vehicle and conversion details, and the specification of any existing rail or awning system. A clear photo of the intended attachment point can also help explain the setup.

Which Vango models offer Low, Mid or Tall options?

Our 2027 Vango inflatable driveaway awning guide covers Roca Air Low and Mid, HexAway Pro II Air Low, Mid and Tall, Cove Air Pro Low, and Kela Pro II Air Low, Mid and Tall.

Our Vango poled driveaway awning guide compares Cove IV and Faros IV Low and Mid models. Not every range is shown in every attachment height.

For more model-specific information, read our HexAway Pro II Air Low, Mid and Tall guide or Roca Air Low and Mid guide.

Does choosing air or poles change the fitting checks?

No. Both inflatable and poled driveaway awnings still need a suitable attachment height, connection length and attachment method. Choosing AirBeam construction does not remove those checks, and a traditional pole frame does not establish compatibility.

Compare Vango AirBeam and poled driveaway awnings for 2027 once you have checked your vehicle’s fitting requirements.

Common fitting mistakes to avoid

  • Measuring overall roof height instead of the actual attachment point.
  • Choosing by vehicle name alone.
  • Assuming Low, Mid and Tall mean the same height ranges across every brand and model year.
  • Checking height but overlooking connection length and attachment method.
  • Assuming a drive-away kit is included or that every kit fits every rail.
  • Buying at a height boundary without confirming the recommended fit.
  • Confusing tunnel-height options with the awning’s floor area.

Planning your UK touring setup

Whether you are heading to Cornwall, the Lake District or a Scottish touring campsite, a careful fitting check is more useful than choosing an awning solely by destination or vehicle type. Allow space for the full pitched footprint and guy lines, and check your campsite’s pitch requirements before travelling.

Follow the supplied instructions for pitching, ventilation and safe use. If you need the awning for a booked holiday, confirm current availability and expected dispatch timing before ordering.

Driveaway awning sizing: frequently asked questions

What size driveaway awning do I need?

Measure the height of your vehicle’s actual attachment point, then check usable connection length and attachment method. Match those details to the exact model’s specification, rather than selecting by vehicle name alone.

What height is a Vango Low driveaway awning?

The Vango Low models featured in our current guides list attachment heights of 180–210cm. Confirm the specification of the exact model and generation you intend to buy.

What height is a Vango Mid driveaway awning?

The featured Vango Mid models list attachment heights of 215–255cm. Check connection length and method as well as height.

What height is a Vango Tall driveaway awning?

The featured HexAway Pro II Air Tall and Kela Pro II Air Tall list attachment heights of 255–295cm. This does not establish the fit range of every Tall awning.

What if my attachment height is 212cm?

That measurement falls between the stated 180–210cm Low and 215–255cm Mid ranges in these examples. Do not assume either will fit; contact World of Camping to discuss a suitable model.

What if my attachment point is exactly 255cm high?

The example Mid and Tall ranges share a 255cm boundary. Ask for advice about the exact model and your connection setup rather than choosing solely from the shared number.

Can you confirm fit from my campervan model name?

A vehicle model name alone is not enough. Attachment height, conversion equipment, connection length and attachment method can differ. Supply your own measurements and connection details.

Do I measure to the top of my roof?

No. Measure vertically from the ground to the actual point where the awning will attach.

Do all Low awnings use the same height range?

Do not assume so. The 180–210cm range here applies to the featured Vango listings. Always check the exact brand, model and generation.

Is a drive-away kit included?

Do not assume it is. Check what is supplied with the exact awning and which separate kit or adapter suits your attachment system.

Can an inflatable awning fit any campervan?

No universal fit is promised. Inflatable construction describes the structure, not compatibility. You must still check the height, connection length and attachment method.

Where can I get help choosing a driveaway awning in the UK?

Contact World of Camping with your attachment height, usable connection length, vehicle and conversion details, and the specification of your attachment system. Use the linked guides to compare model features after checking the fitting requirements.
