Vango Tahoe 400 vs Beta 450XL: Dome or Tunnel Tent?

Damian Rowe |

The Vango Tahoe 400 is a four-person, three-pole dome tent. The Vango Beta 450XL is a four-person, three-pole tunnel tent. Both listings describe a large porch, Midnight Bedroom features and Dynamic Weave 100 fabric. The useful starting point is their different layouts, not their model numbers: both are rated for four campers.

This World of Camping guide compares the Vango Tahoe 400 Tent and Vango Beta 450XL Tent for UK campsite weekends and festival planning. It uses the confirmed details in our product listings without assuming that a tunnel tent is automatically roomier or a dome tent is automatically more stable.

Which four-person tent should you choose?

Shortlist the Tahoe 400 if you want to explore a dome layout with a detachable linked-in porch groundsheet. Shortlist the Beta 450XL if you prefer a tunnel layout and its sleeping and porch arrangement suits your equipment. Compare the floor plans before deciding, as the construction names alone do not establish usable space.

At the prices checked, the Beta was £20 more than the Tahoe. That modest difference makes it particularly useful to focus on layout, bedding fit and transport requirements rather than choosing on price alone.

Vango Tahoe 400: dimensions and practical features

The Tahoe 400 uses colour-coded PowerFlex fibreglass poles and has a large porch for organising kit separately from the bedroom. Its porch groundsheet can be attached or detached rather than being permanently sewn in.

The listed overall dimensions are 390cm long by 260cm wide, with a maximum height of 190cm. Its listed weight is 9.6kg, packed size is 65 × 24 × 24cm and pitching time is 15 minutes.

These are overall measurements, not bedroom dimensions. Maximum height does not mean uniform standing room throughout the dome. Allow extra pitch space for guylines and access, and extra time for your first attempt and for properly securing the tent.

The listing also describes mesh ventilation features, bedroom pockets and lantern hanging points. At 9.6kg, check how far you will carry it from the car before choosing it for a festival.

Vango Beta 450XL: a four-person tunnel alternative

The Beta 450XL is described as a four-person, three-pole tunnel tent with generous sleeping space and a large porch. Its listing includes Sentinel Fabric at 4,000mm HH, ColourLok Eco, Dynamic Weave 100, Midnight Bedrooms and an Easy-Pack Carry Bag.

The description positions it for longer trips as well as roomy weekend camping. Check the actual bedroom and porch measurements to judge whether it suits your beds and bags. Do not assume its XL name means it offers more usable room than the Tahoe in every part of the tent.

The Beta description checked does not provide a directly comparable weight, packed size, overall dimensions or pitching time. Do not apply the Tahoe's figures to the Beta or assume a measured advantage for either model.

Dome vs tunnel: compare layouts, not assumptions

The Tahoe's dome construction and the Beta's tunnel construction give you different layouts to investigate. Study where the bedroom, porch and entrances sit and think about how you will use the space on a typical trip.

Measure your airbeds or sleeping mats before buying. Four-person capacity does not guarantee spare room around wide bedding or luggage. If fewer than four people will use the tent, check how you want to divide sleeping and storage space rather than relying on the capacity number alone.

Neither construction type, by itself, proves that a tent is faster to pitch, more weather-resistant or easier to carry. Those comparisons require model-specific specifications and correct use.

Porch storage and reduced-light bedrooms

Both listings describe a large porch, useful for organising camping essentials separately from the sleeping area. The Tahoe explicitly lists a linked-in porch groundsheet; confirm the Beta's groundsheet arrangement if this is important to you.

Both include Vango Midnight Bedroom terminology for darkened sleeping-area fabric. Treat this as a reduced-light feature, not a guarantee of complete blackout or uninterrupted sleep.

Keep entrances clear and do not count the porch as an extra rated sleeping berth. Never cook or use a barbecue inside a tent or its porch.

Choosing for UK campsites and festivals

For trips in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, compare the complete tent footprint with the campsite's pitch allowance. Leave room for guylines and access, and check the forecast before travelling.

For festivals, confirm packed weight, carrying distance and pitch rules. For car camping, check the room left in your boot after loading bedding, chairs and other equipment. The presence of a carry bag does not establish that either tent is suitable for backpacking.

The Tahoe listing describes occasional and weekend camping, including wet-weather use when correctly pitched, rather than storms or extreme weather. The Beta's fabric rating is not a guarantee of complete-tent performance in every condition. Follow each manufacturer's instructions, practise pitching and choose a suitable site.

Frequently asked questions

Do the Tahoe 400 and Beta 450XL both sleep four people?

Yes. Both featured listings rate these tents for four people. The different numbers in their names do not mean the Beta sleeps more campers.

What is the main difference between them?

The Tahoe 400 is a three-pole dome tent; the Beta 450XL is a three-pole tunnel tent. Compare their individual floor plans to judge the bedroom and porch layouts.

Are either of these tents inflatable?

No. Both are three-pole tents rather than inflatable AirBeam models.

Which tent is cheaper?

At our 21 October 2026 check, the Tahoe 400 was £199 and the Beta 450XL was £219, a £20 difference. Check current prices before buying.

Which tent is lighter?

The Tahoe 400 has a listed weight of 9.6kg. A directly comparable Beta 450XL weight was not confirmed in the description checked, so this guide does not rank them by weight.

Does the Tahoe 400 have a sewn-in porch groundsheet?

No. Its porch groundsheet is linked in and can be attached or detached. Check the Beta's groundsheet arrangement separately.

Do both have blackout bedrooms?

Both listings include Midnight Bedroom features using darkened fabric. This is not a guarantee of complete blackout.

Which is quicker to pitch?

The Tahoe 400 lists a 15-minute pitching time. A comparable Beta 450XL time was not confirmed, so this guide cannot establish which is quicker. Allow additional time for your first pitch and for securing either tent.
