Induction Hobs for Camping: UK Caravan & Motorhome Buying Guide

A stainless steel saucepan on a portable induction hob in a campervan kitchen, with caravans and a green campsite visible through the window.

A camping induction hob is a practical option for UK campers, caravan owners and motorhome travellers with a suitable electrical supply. Choose by rated power, available worktop space and the number of pans you want to use, not simply by the number of cooking zones. You also need induction-compatible cookware and an electrical setup that can support the hob alongside your other appliances.

This World of Camping guide compares Vango and Outdoor Revolution induction hobs and explains the checks to make before cooking on a campsite electric hook-up.

Which induction hob should you choose for camping?

For simple one-pan meals, start by comparing single induction hobs. If lower rated power is your priority, the Vango Sizzle Single is listed at 800W. For two-pan cooking, compare the Vango Sizzle Double and Outdoor Revolution Double, both listed at 800W per zone. The Outdoor Revolution Single offers a listed 200–1,800W power range, so its maximum input is higher than either double model’s combined 1,600W rating.

These are comparisons of listed specifications, not a guarantee that any model suits every campsite or vehicle. Check the current product page and manufacturer’s instructions before buying.

What is an induction hob and how does it work?

An induction hob uses a magnetic field to heat a compatible pan directly. It cooks without a gas flame, but the pan, food and hob surface can still become hot. It is not a risk-free or permanently cold cooking surface.

A portable mains induction hob is most relevant to camping trips with electric hook-up or a suitably specified vehicle electrical system. It is not a standalone alternative to a gas stove when you have no suitable power supply.

What wattage is suitable for a UK campsite electric hook-up?

There is no single wattage suitable for every campsite. Confirm the pitch’s supply limit and site rules, then add up the electrical loads you may use together. A hob, heater, kettle and water heater can compete for the same available capacity.

Approximate current is calculated by dividing watts by volts. At 230V, an 800W hob uses about 3.5A; a 1,600W combined load uses about 7A; and an 1,800W hob uses about 7.8A. These figures illustrate appliance demand only. They do not certify that a hook-up, cable, socket or vehicle installation is suitable.

Check the rated input and how the model controls power. A low temperature setting does not necessarily mean a continuously low electrical draw. Avoid running several high-power appliances together and follow the campsite, appliance and electrical equipment instructions.

Single versus double induction hobs for caravans and motorhomes

A single hob suits soup, pasta, stir-fries and other one-pan meals. It can be easier to accommodate on a small worktop, although one cooking zone does not automatically mean lower power.

A double induction hob gives you two cooking zones for a main dish and a side, or a pan and a hob kettle. Measure your usable worktop and storage space, check the combined input and consider how much preparation space remains. A folding table must meet the appliance’s requirements for stability and heat resistance.

Which camping pans work on an induction hob?

Choose cookware explicitly marked as induction-compatible and check the hob’s permitted pan-base sizes. Stainless steel alone does not guarantee compatibility. A magnet sticking to the base is a useful initial check, but the cookware and hob instructions determine suitability.

The Outdoor Revolution Koga 3-piece Induction Pan Set is listed as suitable for induction. It includes a 2,800ml stock pot with glass lid, a 16.5cm saucepan and a 20.4cm frying pan. Check the actual base dimensions against your chosen hob’s requirements rather than assuming the stated pan sizes are base sizes.

The Outdoor Revolution 2.2L Induction Hob Whistling Kettle is listed as induction-compatible and has a folding handle. It heats on the hob rather than through a separate powered element. Include the hob’s load in your power planning when boiling water.

Using an induction hob on UK camping trips

Whether you are touring Cornwall, staying on a coastal campsite or travelling further across the UK, the checks are the same: confirm your electrical supply, bring compatible cookware and choose a permitted cooking location.

Keep the appliance dry and use a stable, level, heat-resistant surface. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for ventilation, clearances and use locations. A camping label does not mean the hob is weatherproof or suitable for exposed outdoor use. Keep cables away from hot pans and walkways, supervise cooking and let the hob cool before packing it away.

Camping induction hob FAQs

Can I use an induction hob in a caravan or motorhome?

Yes, if the appliance is used in a location permitted by its instructions and your electrical supply and installation can support it. Check available capacity, other appliances, clearances and cookware before use.

Will an 800W induction hob work on a 6A campsite hook-up?

An 800W load draws approximately 3.5A at 230V, which is below 6A on its own. That does not guarantee suitability: other appliances share the supply, and site rules, equipment ratings and installation requirements still apply.

Can I use both zones of a double hob on a 6A supply?

A combined 1,600W load draws approximately 7A at 230V, exceeding 6A before other appliances are included. Do not assume you can use both zones at full power on that supply. Check the model’s operation and campsite requirements before use.

Can I power a camping induction hob from a 12V socket?

Not directly. These mains cooking appliances need a suitable mains supply. Battery operation requires a correctly specified inverter, sufficient battery capacity and a suitable installation. Ask a qualified specialist to assess your vehicle system rather than assuming a leisure battery can run the hob.

Is a single induction hob always lower-wattage than a double?

No. The Outdoor Revolution Single is listed up to 1,800W, while the Outdoor Revolution Double is listed at 800W + 800W. Compare rated input rather than cooking-zone count.

Do I need special pans for a camping induction hob?

You need induction-compatible cookware with base dimensions accepted by the hob. Existing camping pans may work, but check their markings and the hob instructions before travelling.

Can I use an induction kettle on these hobs?

An induction-compatible hob kettle may be suitable if its base meets the particular hob’s requirements. The Outdoor Revolution 2.2L kettle is listed for induction use; check the hob’s accepted cookware dimensions before pairing them.

Can I use a camping induction hob outdoors?

Only in conditions and locations permitted by the manufacturer. Do not assume it can be exposed to rain or damp simply because it is marketed for camping.

Which camping induction hob is best for me?

For one-pan meals, compare single hobs and their rated power first. For two-pan meals, compare double models after checking combined electrical demand and worktop space. Your power supply, cooking habits and storage space matter more than a universal “best” model.
