Choosing the Correct Drive-Away Awning Height & Adjusting the Tunnel

Choosing the Correct Drive-Away Awning Height & Adjusting the Tunnel

Clay Cowie |

Choose a drive-away awning by measuring from the ground to its intended connection point on your vehicle, then checking that measurement against the exact model's stated attachment-height range. Adjusting the tunnel can help manage the fit within that range; it does not make an awning suitable for a vehicle outside it.

This guide focuses on height and tunnel adjustment. For connection systems, air versus poled frames and campsite space, read our complete drive-away awning buying guide.

Where should you measure awning attachment height?

Park your vehicle on level ground in its normal camping setup. Measure vertically from the ground to the point where the awning will connect. For an awning rail, measure to the rail; for a compatible wind-out awning channel or another attachment arrangement, follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions for the intended connection point.

Do not substitute overall roof height for attachment height. Note the connection system, usable connection length and any obstructions around doors or fitted equipment as well. Height is only one part of compatibility.

Low, mid and tall: check the exact figures

Manufacturers and models use different fitting ranges. Labels such as “Low”, “Standard”, “Mid”, “High” and “Tall” are a starting point, not universal measurements.

Check the current specification for the exact model and version you are considering. Do not transfer a height range from another awning or assume that all low awnings fit the same campervans.

For example, the Outdoor Revolution Cayman Air Low 2026 listing specifies an attachment-height range of 180–220cm. That range does not remove the need to check the vehicle's connection system, door clearance and available pitch space.

What if your measurement is close to a range boundary?

Ask for advice for the exact awning and vehicle before ordering. Provide your measured attachment height, vehicle details and photographs of the connection point.

Stay within the manufacturer's specified fitting range. Do not assume that moving the awning closer to the vehicle, changing tunnel tension or adding a fitting kit makes an out-of-range attachment height suitable. An overlapping range does not automatically make one model a better fit than another.

How to adjust the connecting tunnel or cowl

The tunnel joins the freestanding awning to the vehicle. Its fabric and adjustment points allow it to accommodate the model's specified fitting range, but the available adjustments vary.

Pitch and connect the awning in the sequence set out in its instructions. Use the supplied straps, ties or other adjustment points as directed to manage excess material and maintain the intended shape. Avoid overtensioning the fabric, connection rail or fittings.

Check that entrances remain usable, the vehicle door can open as intended and the connection is not pulling the awning out of shape. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for drainage, pegging and guy lines. If you cannot achieve the intended fit within the listed range, stop and seek model-specific advice rather than forcing the connection.

The original article includes this Outdoor Revolution tunnel-adjustment video. Treat it as supporting guidance only where relevant to your model; your exact awning's instructions take priority.

Does loose tunnel fabric mean the awning is faulty?

Not necessarily. Fit depends on the vehicle's height, connection arrangement and the awning's design, so it may look different from a promotional photograph.

Check the measurements, pitching sequence and specified adjustments first. Do not assume every instance of loose fabric is normal, or that stronger tension is the answer. If you notice persistent pooling, damaged fittings, restricted access or an unusual shape, contact the retailer or manufacturer with photographs and model details.

Height and connection kits are different checks

A drive-away fitting kit provides a removable connection for compatible equipment. It does not change the awning's attachment-height range.

Check beading sizes and connection length separately. Our campervan awning buying guide explains what to check before choosing a fitting kit.

See drive-away awnings on display in Cornwall

Frequently asked questions

Is awning attachment height the same as campervan roof height?

Not necessarily. Measure from the ground to the intended awning connection point. A rail or wind-out awning channel can sit at a different height from the roof.

Do all low drive-away awnings have the same height range?

No. Check the specified range for the exact model and version. Low, mid and tall labels vary between manufacturers and products.

Can I use an awning if my rail is above its maximum fitting height?

Do not assume it will fit. Choose within the manufacturer's specified range or obtain explicit model-specific guidance from the manufacturer before buying.

Will a fitting kit change the awning's height range?

No. A connection kit does not alter the specified attachment-height range. Check height and connection compatibility separately.

How do I reduce spare fabric in the tunnel?

Follow the exact model's pitching and connection instructions, then use its specified adjustment points. Do not overtension fittings or use tunnel adjustment to compensate for an out-of-range height.

What should I send when asking for fitting help?

Send the awning's exact model and version, your vehicle's make, model and year, the measured connection height and clear photographs of the rail or connection system and pitched tunnel.

Can I see a drive-away awning before buying?

Yes. World of Camping has drive-away awnings on display in Victoria, near St Austell, Cornwall. Contact us before travelling to confirm the exact display and opening hours. Visitors from Devon are welcome.
