Electric Hookup Options at the Campsite?

Most campsites these days have Electric Hook-up facilities, and as a whole the kit you’ll need is standard across the U.K and most of Europe.

For those of you new to Motorhome or Caravan camping, if your vehicle hasn’t come supplied with a Mains Hook-up lead then you will need to get one in order to connect up the  power supply on your vehicle to mains at the campsite. You’ll probably have seen these orange leads with blue plugs and sockets whilst you’ve been on your travels.

These leads come in either 10 metre or 25 metre lengths. 10 metres will be sufficient for most sites, however not all sites have marked out pitches with an individual power supply (particularly some of the older sites in some parts of Europe) ,and you may want, or need to park a bit further away from the mains supply. In which case we would advise to go for the extra freedom which the 25 metre cable gives you. If you’re planning a long European trip, it’s definitely worth going for the 25 metre cable if you have the space.

If you are camping abroad, some of the older sites you might trundle along to in Europe will still use a standard European 2 pin plug, so you will need to take a Mains Continental Conversion Lead with you if you want to watch tele when you get there, or just plug your mobile in, depending on which level of home comforts you’ve brought with you!

Don’t worry, you don’t have to miss out on some of those home comforts if you’re camping in a tent. There are Mains Supply Units available which can be connected up to the campsite power, and make it safe for you to plug in your hairdryer / laptop / mobile phone / camping kettle, inside your tent.

Check out our Camping Electrics section for other innovations from Power Inverters to Solar Chargers, if you love to get away, but not from your beloved gadgets!
