Winter Camping Tips

Posted in Camping Tips & Ideas on 9th October 2014

Author - James Coplin

As we edge closer to the Winter months, it is clear the Summer is well and truely over and for most of us means we pack away our camping equipment for the Winter season. However, a rare breed of camping enthusiasts will not let the Winter season put a stop to their fun. Relishing the challenge, these guys are prepared for anything that mother nature chucks at them. A winning combination of  the right attitude and good camping equipment is a huge factor when undergoing a Winter camping trip.

We are going to give you a heads up on the  most important Winter camping equipment and tips needed to make your trip as enjoyable as possible.

Top Tips for Winter Camping

1.   Layers – Whether your hiking up a mountain or going for a leisurely walk ,we can’t stress enough the importance of layering your clothing. The idea is to be able to adjust your body temperature to how you feel by removing or adding layers, rather than putting on your biggest coat.  When we say ‘layering’ we aren’t suggesting you chuck 3 sweaters on, ideally you want 4 layers that each serve a different purpose. For example, a base layer should be (wool based) the closest layer to your skin and therefore collects the most sweat, the purpose of this layer is to keep you dry by sending the mositure away from the skin whilst adding some insulating properties. Layer 2 should be a lightweight wind jacket.Protecting yourself from wind-chill can make a huge difference in how warm you feel and it isn’t going to break the piggy bank. Layer 3 should ideally be a type of insulation jacket. It needs to be lightweight, warm and highly compressible. The final layer needs to be a technical jacket that understands your outdoor lifestyle will cycle between extreme sweating and being battered by a storm. If you can follow this layering guide you are well on your way to being a Winter camper.

2.  Wear a hat- This is often overlooked and is probably the most valuable tip of them all,  ‘WEAR A HAT’. Over 50% of body heat is lost through your head, so it is crucial that you cover your head if you are cold or want to keep warm. If you dont have a hat to stick on, an alternative is to use the hood of your coat. As long as your head is insulated in some way, your body will reap the benefits.

3.  Insulate the floor – With temperatures at night often dropping close to zero, making sure your warm at night is critical for a good nights sleep. The ground is cold and making sure you insulate the space between you and the ground with a good camping mat will pay dividends. If you want more insulation, try putting dry leaves and grass under your camping mat, it will provide more warmth. For more camping tips on how to stay warm at night.

4.   Lots of Socks – When on a camping trip you can never have too many pairs of socks. You may laugh but as soon as your socks become slightly damp its time to change them. Having wet feet can lead to many problems, so it’s important to resolve as quickly as possible. You preferably want to be wearing some kind of walking/thermal pair of socks, as these will prevent rubbing and will keep your feet nice and toasty.

5. The camping spot – When deciding where to pitch your tent, try to take everything into consideration. Think about wind direction, forecasted weather and the surroundings. Firstly, Pick somewhere  that is safe and then seek a spot that will keep you sheltered from the elements. Wind will be your biggest threat next to getting wet, so if you can secure somewhere that minimises this, you should be on for a good trip.
