Autumn Caravan and Motorhome Comfort: Five Ways to Stay Cosy on Colder Trips

Damian Rowe |

Autumn trips in the UK can mean bright afternoons, chilly evenings and damp mornings. You don’t need to pack everything you own to stay comfortable: plan for lighting, warmth, a good night’s sleep and moisture control, then make the most of the time you spend outside. Here are five practical ways to prepare your caravan, motorhome or camping setup for cooler weather.

1. Make evenings easier with a rechargeable lantern

Darkness comes earlier in autumn. A lantern you can carry from your pitch to your awning makes cooking, packing and settling in less of a faff. The Quest Elite Rocket Neutron Lantern is cordless and USB-C rechargeable, with adjustable brightness so you can use brighter light for practical jobs and a gentler glow for relaxing. Charge it before you travel and keep it somewhere easy to reach after you pitch.

2. Choose electric heat to match your hook-up

A small heater can help take the chill off a caravan or motorhome when you have a suitable mains electric hook-up. The Quest Belize Digital Table Top Ceramic Heater has 600W and 1200W settings, a thermostat and a timer. Check your pitch’s power limit and the total demand from other appliances before switching it on. Follow the manufacturer’s placement and supervision instructions; don’t assume a heater is suitable for a tent, awning or overnight use. For a closer comparison, read our guide to choosing caravan and motorhome heaters.

3. Set up for a warmer night’s sleep

When the temperature drops after sunset, your sleeping setup matters as much as your daytime layers. Check a sleeping bag’s warmth guidance against the conditions you expect, and think about insulation beneath you as well. For a caravan or motorhome setup, the Duvalay Compact Sleeping Bag in Plum combines a 4.5 tog duvet with a topper in a roll-up format. A tog figure alone won’t tell you whether it is warm enough for every night, so consider your vehicle, heating and personal comfort too. If you’re comparing camping mats, our Shangri-La Lux 12 vs 16 guide explains the choices.

4. Dress for time outside and enjoy a fire only where permitted

You don’t have to retreat indoors as soon as the sun sets. A changing robe can help you stay comfortable while sitting out: compare the Osprey Changing Robe and the Dryrobe Advance Forest Green/Black. Check which sizes are available before ordering.

If your campsite permits fires, the EcoFuego El Campo Fire Pit in Matte Black adds a flame to an outdoor seating area using its specified wax fuel. Use it outdoors only, following the manufacturer’s instructions, the site’s rules and local restrictions. Keep it away from tents, awnings, vehicles and anything combustible; never use it for indoor heating or leave a flame unattended.

5. Manage moisture, don’t just mask it

Condensation can build up in a caravan or motorhome when warm, damp air meets cooler surfaces. Ventilate as your vehicle’s guidance recommends, dry wet kit appropriately and keep an eye on moisture after cooking and sleeping. Kontrol Krystals refill packs absorb moisture when used with a compatible moisture trap. They are refills, not a complete moisture-trap unit, and they do not replace ventilation or fix a leak. Check compatibility and follow the pack instructions before use.

Autumn camping comfort: quick questions

What should I pack for a colder caravan trip?

Start with a lantern, layers for sitting outside, a sleeping setup suited to expected temperatures and a plan for ventilation. If you’ll use electric heat, check your pitch’s hook-up allowance and your heater’s instructions before travelling.

Can I use a fire pit inside an awning?

No. Keep the El Campo fire pit outdoors and follow the manufacturer’s clearances and the campsite’s fire rules. Do not use it in a tent, awning, caravan or motorhome.

Will moisture crystals stop condensation?

They can absorb some airborne moisture when used in a compatible trap, but they won’t replace ventilation or solve the underlying cause of persistent condensation. Investigate leaks or recurring damp rather than relying on crystals alone.
