Rent out your Tent!

This year we’ve seen a notable rise in the great British public choosing to stay at home for a camping holiday in the UK. The camping industry as a whole has been thriving this year. As a company we at World of Camping have had a very busy season and being based in Redruth in Cornwall we’ve been able to easily gauge this extra level of interest both by traffic in and out of our showroom (of our customers picking up bargains on tents, driveaway awnings and other camping equipment)  and of that on our windy country lanes!

As well as the staycation crew, thanks to certain currency fluctuations recently we’ve also seen a rise in visits from our European neighbours flocking over the channel to take advantage of their stronger Euro. As well as campsites being fully booked, plenty of hotels and B&Bs have been stacked to the rafters too. Because of this, many campers have expanded their horizons to the new wave of accomodation sites like Airbnb, Tripping.com and Flipkey. These peer to peer online marketplaces allow punters to book and stay in other residential properties, be it an entire house or flat, a single room, a sofa, or even a tent in someone’s garden! Seriously, it’s a common option. Furnish a tent with some camp beds, sleeping bags, a coolbox and some camping furniture and you’re ready to start earning some pocket money!

From a camping perspective these websites allow people with a big back garden to stick up a tent and rent it out with a minimum of fuss. A quick glance at airbnb sees listings of people renting out bell tents on their property, often with access to kitchen and toilet facilites, some of them within walking distance to a beach. Some of these are small businesses using the website as an extra source of advertising, some are just people earning a few extra quid by inviting guests to stay in a tent their field or garden. The main thing is that as a camper you get a greater choice and some interesting options.

If you don’t have room or the transport to carry a tent but fancy a couple of nights camping then this could be worth checking out. On the other hand, if you have a big garden or a bit of land that could accommodate some paying guests then you could use this as an opportunity to get that new Outwell Polycotton Air Tent that was previously slightly out of budget, to pay for itself!
